How to Improve Employee Office Space to Reduce Injuries

Employees can fall and suffer injuries for many reasons. When those injuries occur during the normal course of business or on your property, you may be responsible. Workers' compensation insurance can help. Yet, your goal is to reduce those risks. Taking a few simple steps can help limit the number of injuries at your office. What risks are there? How can you control them?

Pathways Are Tricky two male factory workers
One of the most common causes of injuries is a fall. Tripping over something in a pathway can cause significant injury. Someone may break a bone. Others may hit their head as they fall. Keep pathways clear. Do not allow employees to store items on the floor in any area. Be sure there are no cords running through these walkways either.

Teach to Lift
Heavy boxes or equipment can cause back strain. Even if a box is not heavy, picking it up in the wrong manner can create a high-risk situation. To reduce this, teach employees the proper way to lift packages.

Lift by bending the legs. Do not stoop over. Do not bend over the box. Simply squat down, wrap the arms around it, and lift. This reduces pressure and strain on the back itself.

Handle Spills Quickly
Spills in areas like the break room are common. They happen. You cannot stop them from occurring in most cases. You can minimize risks, though.

Use disposable cups with lids for coffee. Provide cleaning supplies within an arm’s reach to ensure people clean up spills right away. And, be sure a wet floor sign is always within reach.

Ergonomically Correct
When buying furniture for your employees, choose ergonomically correct varieties. This type of equipment specifically reduces strain on joints and muscles. It helps an individual to sit properly. This reduces strain. It can also reduce strain on the hands, arms, and neck.

Focus on a Tidy Space
An organized space is a professional one. Yet, putting items away and keeping desks clear means there is less to fall onto the floor. Keep drawers closed, so no one walks into them. And, be sure all overhead storage is minimal. If you use overhead storage, keep the spaces closed. Encourage employees to use a step ladder to bring items down from these areas.

Taking these steps can keep your employees safe. It can also reduce workers' compensation insurance claims. This saves you money.
