3 Ways to Make Your Home More Disaster Resistant

Your home is the place you've raised your family, spent decades of your life and made your own. It is for all of these reasons that you need to invest in ways to protect it. In doing so, you may save on your home insurance premium costs. How can you make your home more disaster resistant? These three steps can get you started in protecting your home from various risks.

Number 1: Install Protective Devices happy couple standing in front of house

The biggest risk to most homes is the risk of fire, theft or smoke damage. To prevent against these risks, consider the installation of protective devices. Some products are more effective and more impactful when it comes to lowering your costs. It's a good idea to invest in options such as the following:

  • Smoke alarms should be placed throughout your home, and especially near bedrooms.
  • Install burglar alarms on all exterior doors and windows.
  • Invest in a home monitoring system or smart home system that connects your home to the local fire department.
  • Carbon monoxide monitors are also an important investment.
  • Install high-quality, deadbolt locks on all of your exterior doors. Ensure windows have ample protection as well.

These protective systems give you the ability to react faster to risks and they can help protect your home, even when you are not there.

Number 2: Fire Resistant Materials
The installation of a new roof is the perfect time for you to upgrade to a fire resistant material. You can add fire resistant materials to your siding too. In addition to this, create a fire gap around your home. Reduce the number and type of plants and other materials surrounding your home within five feet, especially if you live in a fire risk area.

Number 3: Waterproof
Waterproofing your basement and taking extra steps, such as grading your landscape to allow water to move away from the home, can help keep your foundation dry and your home less at risk for damage from floods and storms.

These three steps are the right direction for those who want to minimize risks to their home. When you make these types of upgrades, be sure to alert your home insurance carrier. They may offer a discount to you as a result.
